Hi, I’m Amara! I have been dancing since I was two years old, and over the years, dance has become much more than something I do in the studio. Through years of rehearsals, performances, and constantly learning new movements, dance has challenged me, helped me build confidence, and given me an outlet for expressing myself. It has also made me realize that movement can affect how we feel, think, and connect with others, something that has made me curious about the connection between dance and psychology.

As I’ve grown up, I’ve started to realize that dance affects me in ways that go far beyond learning choreography or performing. After a long day at school, I sometimes go to dance feeling tired and unmotivated, but I almost always leave feeling happier, less stressed, and more focused. For me, dancing is a chance to forget everything else for a while, spend time with some of my best friends, and simply enjoy moving. As I’ve become more interested in psychology, learning about dance therapy has helped me understand that the feelings I experience through dance may be connected to the way movement can influence our emotions and well-being.

The more I learn about psychology, the more I realize that many of my experiences with dance have a psychological side to them. The way dance can change my mood, help me manage stress, build my confidence, and connect me with other people has made me curious about why movement can have such a powerful effect on our minds. This connection between something I have loved for most of my life and something I am becoming increasingly interested in studying is what led me to create this blog.

Through this blog, I’ll explore the ways psychology and dance intersect, from performance and confidence to mental health, connection, and dance/movement therapy. I’m creating this space to learn more, share what I discover, and explore the questions that make me curious.

Confidence Isn't Choreographed

When I was younger, I was really shy. I didn't talk much, and it showed in the way I danced, too. I was careful with my movements, rarely used facial expressions, and often gravitated toward the back
